Freycinet trails & lookouts
Guide updated · grades and open status change — verify Parks Tasmania
Start with a clear lookouts vs hard walk decision. Wineglass Lookout + one optional moderate segment covers most first Hobart day trips. Distances, grades and times below are planning ranges — always confirm on Parks Tasmania and park alerts. Weather, closures and stair status change.
Decide before you lace up
- Easy walks: Cape Tourville, Sleepy Bay, Friendly Beaches — high reward, still real cliffs and unpatrolled water.
- Moderate first climb: Wineglass Bay Lookout — steep gravel to the saddle platforms. Turn around is always allowed; the beach stairs are a separate decision.
- Hard days: Hazards Circuit, Mount Amos (dry rock only), or the Peninsula Circuit overnight — one hero only, early start, full water, exit plan.
Two hard walks plus the lookout on a first visit is how people run out of daylight. Pick the table row that matches your energy, then open the trail guide for how to get there.

Quick comparison (planning only)
| Walk / lookout | Effort | Time | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wineglass Lookout | moderate | 1–1.5 hours | First-timers, the classic Wineglass view, mixed-ability groups who can handle a steep climb |
| Hazards Circuit | hard | 4–5 hours | Fit day-walkers who want the lookout, the beach and a full granite-coast day |
| Peninsula Circuit | hard | 2–3 days | Self-sufficient overnight walkers who can carry water and a fuel stove |
| Mount Amos | hard | About 3 hours | Fit, experienced walkers in dry weather who want the widest Wineglass panorama |
| Cape Tourville | easy | About 20 minutes | Families, limited mobility (formed path), lighthouse photos, a second stop after the lookout |
| Sleepy Bay | moderate | Short return — allow extra time on wet rock | Rocky coastline photos, a quiet add-on near Cape Tourville |
| Friendly Beaches | easy | 30 minutes to half a day | Space, long white sand, a quieter alternative when Wineglass is packed |
Easy
Cape Tourville
easyShort, easy coastal circuit to Cape Tourville lighthouse with high granite-cliff views. A good backup when the Walking Tracks Car Park is full or the group cannot climb to Wineglass Lookout.
- Grade
- Easy formed circuit
- Time
- About 20 minutes
- Distance
- 600 m circuit

Friendly Beaches
easyLong white-sand beach and dunes north of the Hazards, reached by a gravel road off Coles Bay Road. Different park experience: wind, space, low-key camping at Isaacs Point. No 4WD required, but it is not the sealed Wineglass road.
- Grade
- Easy beach walking
- Time
- 30 minutes to half a day
- Distance
- 100 m to 5 km (official range)

Moderate
Wineglass Lookout
moderateThe walk most people come for: a steep 1.3 km climb each way through coastal woodland to saddle platforms with the classic Wineglass Bay and Mount Graham view. Not a wheelchair path, and not a long trek — a short, steep climb that fills early in peak season.
- Grade
- Some bushwalking experience recommended
- Time
- 1–1.5 hours
- Distance
- 2.6 km return

Sleepy Bay
moderateOfficial listing: 500 m return, Grade 3 — a short walk to a rocky granite cove. Less crowded than Wineglass; different character (rock, not the white-sand crescent). Surfaces can be uneven.
- Grade
- Some bushwalking experience recommended
- Time
- Short return — allow extra time on wet rock
- Distance
- 500 m return

Hard
Hazards Circuit
hardThe best full-day Freycinet walk: lookout, stairs to Wineglass Bay beach, isthmus, Hazards Beach, then a longer rocky inland return around Mount Mayson. Not a casual add-on after a late start.
- Grade
- Bushwalking experience recommended
- Time
- 4–5 hours
- Distance
- 11 km circuit

Peninsula Circuit
hardThe park’s multi-day: 27 km over 2–3 days from the Walking Tracks Car Park, free unbooked walker camps at Hazards, Cooks and Wineglass. Official advice is anti-clockwise (western side first) to limit Phytophthora spread. Water is the critical planning factor.
- Grade
- Bushwalking experience recommended (multi-day)
- Time
- 2–3 days
- Distance
- 27 km, 2–3 days

Mount Amos
hardSteep rock scrambling on exposed granite slabs to the best panoramic Wineglass Bay view in the park. Extremely dangerous when wet. Not for children, older walkers or anyone who treats “3.6 km” as easy.
- Grade
- Experienced, fit walkers only
- Time
- About 3 hours
- Distance
- 3.6 km return
