Guide updated · verify Parks Tasmania for park camping
Prioritise official Parks Tasmania camping if you want to wake up next to the walks. When you want commercial stays, base in Coles Bay for park-edge convenience, Bicheno for more services, or Swansea on the Hobart–east-coast loop. Official park camping: Parks Tasmania — camping & accommodation.

Official camping & park accommodation
Book only via Parks Tasmania for Richardsons Beach / Honeymoon Bay / Ranger Creek (Visitor Centre 03 6256 7004 on the official camping page), Friendly Beaches (Isaacs Point), and walker camps (free, unbooked). Honeymoon tent-only knoll sites are summer holidays and Easter only. A Parks Pass is still required on top of any camping fee. Peak vehicle camping uses a ballot (early August draw). This site does not affiliate Parks Pass or official camping.

Gateway commercial stays
Booking.com searches below may earn a commission. They do not include Parks Tasmania camping rights. Card photos are real Wikimedia Commons images for place context — not the specific hotels on Booking.com. Commercial caravan parks in Coles Bay township are outside the park boundary.

Coles Bay
Immediate park-edge gateway — closest commercial beds to the Visitor Centre, Honeymoon Bay and the Walking Tracks Car Park. The default first-night base.
The Hazards above Coles Bay (not a hotel exterior)
Gateway cards above are beds. This block is the operating layer: last fuel, last grocery, and how close you need to be to the Walking Tracks Car Park. No invented pump prices or clinic names. Official park camping stays on Parks Tasmania.
Families
Bicheno for more grocery, fuel and bed choice when Coles Bay is full or expensive. Coles Bay if you want the kids at Honeymoon Bay instead of in the car. Cape Tourville is the easy lighthouse product; the lookout stairs are a separate Grade 3.
Early / peak starts
Sleep in Coles Bay if the lookout car park is the product. A Bicheno bed plus a 40-minute morning drive still beats a 5am Hobart departure — it does not beat an 8am walk from Coles Bay in January. Peak vehicle camping is a ballot, not a walk-up.
Closest to the icon
Official vehicle camping (Richardsons / Honeymoon / Ranger Creek) when you can book it — plus a Parks Pass on top. Coles Bay township if you missed the ballot. Friendly Beaches / Isaacs Point is a different beach product, not overflow for the lookout lot. Swansea sits on the Hobart–east-coast loop.
Optional guided Freycinet days and packing kit — after you have chosen a base above. Parks Pass and official Parks Tasmania camping are never affiliated.
Guided tours
Optional — useful for first visits from Hobart without a car
A tour does not replace checking Parks Tasmania alerts, weather, or cliff safety yourself.
What to bring
Practical kit for granite walks, scarce water and coastal sun
Grip hiking shoes / bootsSteep granite and loose gravel on the lookout, circuit and Mount Amos — fashion sneakers fail here
Day pack 20–30 LWater is the bulk of the pack on Freycinet — carry more than you think
Water bottles or bladder 2–3 LWater is scarce on tracks; refill at Visitor Centre, Honeymoon Bay and Walking Tracks Car Park only
Sun hat + high SPFWhite sand, granite and open heath reflect UV; shade is limited on many sections
Mosquito protectionRoss River virus risk is published for the area — take repellent, not just a hat
Fuel stove (no open fires)Park is fuel-stove only. On Total Fire Ban days even gas/fuel stoves are banned — confirm on the day
Light rain / wind shellCoastal weather flips; summit and lookout platforms get windy even on a “fine” Coles Bay morning
PLB or satellite messengerSensible for Peninsula Circuit and remote sections; 000 needs mobile reception
First-aid + blister kitGranite slabs and long beach sand punish hot spots — treat them early
Power bank + offline mapsScreenshot Parks Tasmania pages and carry offline maps; in-park reception is patchy
HeadlampCircuit and peninsula days run long; dusk wildlife driving is a real risk
Spare socksBeach sections and creek crossings soak feet; dry socks keep the return civil
