Peninsula Circuit (2–3 days)
Best for: Self-sufficient overnight walkers with a water plan
Guide updated · verify Parks Tasmania the morning you go
Anti-clockwise from the Walking Tracks Car Park. Free unbooked walker camps. Water is the critical factor. Print official walk notes — this is orientation, not a permit.

Do this after you already understand the day walks. The peninsula is not “the circuit plus a tent.” It is a dry, granite, fuel-stove walk with unreliable tanks.
Parks Tasmania advises anti-clockwise to limit Phytophthora spread. Parks Pass only — no extra walk permit. Camps free, no bookings. There is no southern pickup.
Treat tanks and creeks as empty in summer. Wineglass walker camp has no reliable water. Cooks Hut tank is the usual top-up before the hard day — and it can be dry. Boil anything you use.
Print official walk notes and the overnight-walker page. This itinerary is a skeleton. Official notes win if they disagree.
Track status, weather, fees and fire bans change — verify on Parks Tasmania before you leave, then use the timeline below as a planning skeleton only. A Parks Pass is not a campsite, and a full car park is not a reason to park on the verge.

Timeline
Before you leave home
Water, stove, intentions
Capacity for dry camps. Fuel stove (and a Total Fire Ban plan that might mean cold food). PLB or satellite messenger. Offline maps. Tell someone not on the walk. Read official walk notes and the overnight-camping page. Parks Pass bought.
Trailhead morning
Walking Tracks Car Park
Fill every bottle and bladder at the tap. Toilets. Leave the vehicle for the whole trip. Overnight walkers and lookout day-trippers mix at 8am — be civil. Food sealed.
Day 1
West side: Hazards then Cooks
Anti-clockwise: car park → Hazards Beach (~7 km / 2 h) → Cooks Beach (~5 km / 1.5 h). Many parties combine these. Top up at Cooks Hut tank if it has water. Do not assume it does in summer. Hut is emergency use only.
Hard day
Cooks to Wineglass via Mount Graham
About 11 km / 6–8 hours, steeper, ~500 m of climbing on official notes. Optional Mount Freycinet side-trip only if time and water allow. Wineglass walker camp has no reliable water — carry enough from Cooks.
Exit morning
Wineglass camp to car park
About 4 km / 1.5 hours. You finish where you began. Do not add Amos or Cape Tourville “as a cooldown.” Sit down in Coles Bay.

- There is no southern pickup.
- Fill every container at the car-park tap before you walk away.
- Parks Pass required; no extra walk permit; walker camps are not Richardsons Beach.
Skip if short on time / energy
- First-time Freycinet visitors who have not yet done the lookout
- Parties who cannot carry water for a dry Wineglass camp
- No fuel-stove / no Total Fire Ban cold-food plan
- Mount Freycinet side-trip on a whim
- A two-day squeeze if the group is already tired from travel
Extra tips
Who this plan is for
- Self-sufficient overnight walkers who already know the day walks
- Parties with dry-camp water capacity and a stove plan
- People who will walk anti-clockwise because official notes say so
Decision gates
- Cooks tank empty → you still need Wineglass-camp litres. Turn around if you do not have them.
- Total Fire Ban → cold food or do not start.
- Anyone struggling on the western beaches → do not start the Graham day.
What success looks like
- Whole party back at the car
- Water plan held
- Official notes were the document in the lid of the pack
If this is too much
- Use the two-day Coles Bay itinerary instead
- Read the peninsula water-planning article
- Do the lookout and the day circuit first

What to bring
Practical kit for granite walks, scarce water and coastal sun
- Grip hiking shoes / bootsSteep granite and loose gravel on the lookout, circuit and Mount Amos — fashion sneakers fail here
- Day pack 20–30 LWater is the bulk of the pack on Freycinet — carry more than you think
- Water bottles or bladder 2–3 LWater is scarce on tracks; refill at Visitor Centre, Honeymoon Bay and Walking Tracks Car Park only
- Sun hat + high SPFWhite sand, granite and open heath reflect UV; shade is limited on many sections
- Mosquito protectionRoss River virus risk is published for the area — take repellent, not just a hat
- Fuel stove (no open fires)Park is fuel-stove only. On Total Fire Ban days even gas/fuel stoves are banned — confirm on the day
- Light rain / wind shellCoastal weather flips; summit and lookout platforms get windy even on a “fine” Coles Bay morning
- PLB or satellite messengerSensible for Peninsula Circuit and remote sections; 000 needs mobile reception
- First-aid + blister kitGranite slabs and long beach sand punish hot spots — treat them early
- Power bank + offline mapsScreenshot Parks Tasmania pages and carry offline maps; in-park reception is patchy
- HeadlampCircuit and peninsula days run long; dusk wildlife driving is a real risk
- Spare socksBeach sections and creek crossings soak feet; dry socks keep the return civil
